Annual Ministry Report
Practicting the way of Jesus together for the life of the world
WHO WE ARE BECOMING
Greetings Soma Midtown,
I am deeply thankful for this community and for the many ways God has shown His faithfulness to us this past year. He has preserved and protected us through challenges, and you have responded with hospitality, trust, and openness to the Spirit’s work among us. Together, we’ve walked through significant moments of transition: closing the Lead Pastor Search, sending our Founding Pastors—Brandon and Emily Shields, and joyfully welcoming Wesley Kouba, along with his family, as our new Lead Pastor.
As we pray and listen for God’s leading in this season, we want to mark His nearness and faithful love. We know it can be hard to remember His presence when He feels distant or silent. Yet we are promised that God will never leave us or forsake us, and that the Spirit is with us—comforting, guiding, and assuring us.
I say this on behalf of the Soma leadership, we are grateful to the Lord for each of you and excited to keep laboring, celebrating, resting, and serving together. May we step into this new year with hope and anticipation for all that God has in store.
With love and gratitude,
James, on behalf of the Elders, Board, and Staff
LOOKING BACK AT 2024 - 2025
Our 2024-2025 Ministry Plan was focused on entering into a season of discernment and preparation for where God would lead us in the future. We sensed a continued call to deeper maturity, stability, and consistency, both as disciples of Jesus and as an organization. Just like a tree matures by digging deep roots and spreading out its branches, we wanted to focus on inviting people “deeper in” to experiencing life with Jesus and “further out” to the margins of society to love others in Jesus’ name.
Entering into a lead pastor transition has also been a defining aspect of this year, and has been supported by deep investment from our Board, Elder, and Staff teams and the congregation as a whole. Thank you. This has been the priority that God, in His graciousness, was leading us to slow down to make space for.

PRACTICING THE WAY OF JESUS

Being with Jesus, becoming like Jesus, doing what Jesus did

50+ attended the spring Day Sabbatical - the largest group ever!
“The Spring Day Sabbatical was a gift to each of us. As parents of small, very talkative children, dedicated moments of quiet reflection and prayer are few and far between for us. The day felt healing and rejuvenating, preparing us to head back into our normal daily routine of raising our boys. During the Day Sabbatical, I was (unknowingly) nearing the end of an unexpected job transition. Looking back, the day was so important in preparing for the busy final stages of job interviews - grounding my perspective and hope in the Lord in a very vulnerable time.”

Launched the Practicing the Way course (70+ attended!) and the Generosity and Scripture practice cohorts
“Over the past year at Soma, I leaned fully into every PTW cohort courses available — and through that, the Lord transformed the depth of intimacy I share with Him. I initially joined out of curiosity, wondering why Jesus emphasized these practices. But God, in His grace, didn’t just give me answers — He gave me Himself. He taught me through experience. What once felt like a struggle — discerning His voice from my own — has now become a place of clarity and peace. I used to think the confusion was my fault, that something in me was broken. But through Sabbath, fasting, and Scripture, God gently revealed that I was simply missing pieces of the whole. He’s still putting them together — and with each piece, I see more clearly. Today, I hear from God daily — something I never imagined was possible this side of heaven. And in that daily communion, I’ve encountered a love deeper than I knew existed, a trust that heals, and an obedience that flows not from striving, but from intimacy — a kind that surpasses my own understanding.”
-Liz Massaqoi
“How the Practice Cohorts Have Blessed Me:
-Meeting people/connecting
-Participating in a thorough study of each discipline
-Learning practical applications/ how to’s, and having support from the other participants as I grow in these practices
-Hearing others’ perspectives on the disciplines, how they apply them to their life
-Developing prayer support within the Soma community
-I’ve been encouraged to look for ways to become involved in community
-I’ve enjoyed the supplemental books used for our book club
-I have found the spiritual health assessment to be helpful”-Jan Woodall

Re-opened a dedicated prayer room - hosting groups of all sizes to seek the Lord and experience His presence together.
90+ participated in training in different modalities of prayer in partnership with 24-7 Prayer.
“Often in my day-to-day rhythm it’s easy to find myself emotionally far from my loving Father. Our shared space on Sunday evenings counters that trend. God meets me. In this time I’m able to find words previously left unsaid, allowing my heart to rest with Him.”
-CJ Duffey
“Consistently attending prayer nights in the prayer room has allowed God to give me new imagination for what prayer can look like. We have gone beyond what I’m used to community prayer looking like — simply collecting prayer requests and moving on after the night was over. While that is a fine and beautiful way to pray for one another, there have been moments in this prayer room where it has felt as if God’s grace was washing over the room and painting it in living color. We have listened to God on behalf of one another in the prayer room, we have wept for one another in the prayer room, we have sung songs of victory over one another in the prayer room. I have not experienced the “with-ness” of God’s presence through the presence of his people like this in a long time. I remember a time in the prayer room where the vulnerability of others in the room prompted me to share a struggle I’d held in shame for so long, not thinking anyone would understand. To my surprise, someone else in the room approached me afterwards and shared that they struggle with the same burden. Suddenly, my load was lifted. I believed I was all alone in my struggle, but God was so kind to remind me that He sees me and that help and healing are available to me. These times of prayer have enriched, and at times, held up my walk with the Lord. What a gift it has been!”

“James 4 opens with a question of what causes quarrels and fights among the people. His answer is that they desire and do not have. Specifically, that they do not have because they do not ask. In v. 2 he writes, “Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure.” One of the lifechanging realizations that I had while serving on the transition team was learning how to ask God for the things that I needed. As a team we also prayed for God to give us what we needed. We prayed that God would align our hearts with his, our pace with his, and our plans with his. Constant was the refrain of “if God isn’t in this, then we don’t want to do it”, whatever that “this” was. What was so cool was seeing our prayers join with the prayers of the church for that same request. Before a big meeting that would be focused on a pivotal point in the transition, Leah Lowery came in, and prayed over the meeting, over the team. I don’t know if she knew that her prayers were identical to ours or that she was praying for what would turn into the meeting for moving forward with Wesley, but her prayers joined with ours and it was a peaceful and wisdom filled moment. In this transition, I’ve been able to better identify my desires and align those with God’s desires, and that has changed what I ask God for and trust him to do.”

new MCs launched
”Our group has started to commit serve with Pourhouse together and that has been awesome! We have seasonally done car blessing bags, which has been a great way to involve kids too, to keep on hand to give whenever we see anyone on the street. I’ve noticed my own kids being on the lookout and finding great joy in loving our neighbors in such a simple way through the car blessing bags and saying a quick prayer for them.
Since we launched last October (can’t believe we’re coming up on a year 😱🎉), individual members/families within our group have gone through some pretty heavy things so there has been a lot of “on mission” within our own group. It has been so beautiful seeing + being a part of + experiencing bearing one another’s burdens in so many tangible/practical and spiritual ways. It has grown my own faith and deeply bonded us together. Feels like a little taste of heaven to be on mission with one another, both inward with the group and outward with others!”
-Monica Brown (Brown/Williams MC)
“Even though we just launched earlier this year and are still figuring out our rhythms, our MC has already shown us so much of God’s love and hospitality. We’ve had two family members in crisis come to stay with us temporarily this year, and both times, even though we haven’t known our MC for long, they’ve jumped right into it with us, welcoming our family members to our Tuesday night meetings and praying for and with them and us during moments of crisis. Within minutes of sending out a bat signal for help, we’ve been flooded with texts of prayer and even a call with an offer to drive an hour away if needed and been prayed for right there on the phone. We are so grateful for the sense of God’s peace and provision we’ve seen through our new MC fam even in such a short time together.”

“In 2024–2025, God has moved powerfully through Three Accord, weaving His faithfulness into the lives of our Soma couples. One of the sweetest ways we’ve seen Him at work has been through one-on-one premarital counseling. These intentional conversations created space for couples to lay Christ-centered foundations and invite God into their relationships from the very beginning. Another highlight was the Three Accord reunion, where couples from past premarital classes gathered to share stories of God’s provision and celebrate answered prayers. It became a beautiful space to rejoice in victories, testify to God’s presence in struggles, and remember that marriage is not meant to be walked alone but within a Christ-centered community. Throughout the year, our team has also committed to intentional prayer over Soma marriages—interceding for protection, unity, growth, and joy. In every prayer, we’ve asked that Christ would remain the anchor, guiding couples to love one another as He has loved us.”

“At first glance, the most notable way I see God’s presence in Soma kids is in the dignity and value shown to its kids. I normally volunteer with ages 2-3, but one Sunday I had the privilege of serving in the 18-24 months room. A girl who volunteers there each week had something nice to say about the unique personalities of every child who walked into that room (and there were 10+ kids there)! Another time, as our 2s class prepared for snack time, my co-teacher prayed for each child by name, thanking God that they joined us that day and asking for His presence with them. These are only two examples (there are many more), but I think they reflect a deeper pattern in Soma kids- that each child is treated as an image-bearer of God.
I wish I had more “wow” moments to share with you, but really the way I see God working in Soma Kids is in the ordinary faithfulness of those who show up every week/month, who pray for and teach the kids, and who choose to serve Soma families with Christ-like love.”

“God has worked in an abundance of ways in the past year for Soma Students. In the past couple years, Soma has lost several high school students for various reasons and our numbers were lowering every week. It was incredibly challenging to continue a group without people. However, I am so grateful to now be able to say that God has shown his goodness and created a community with the addition of several students into the middle school program!! I am so thankful to be able to show up to Soma Students and have a new group of friends that love Jesus!”-
-Maggie Lambert
“I’ve been struck by how God has worked in the lives of all our students. For me specifically working with the middle school boys it’s been awesome to see the Lord’s hand and provision over the lives of the boys. I’ve been with this year’s freshmen the past 3 years while they were in middle school. God has blessed these boys with a special bond and I’ve been encouraged to see them grow closer to God, together. They are their own little (sometimes chaotic) community that genuinely love being around each other and I know God’s smiling down on this specific group of kids!”

Largest ever NRN trip (23) able to participate in and be blessed by the ministry of our sister church, Bethsaida.
“My husband, son and I had the honor of going on the Soma Nicaragua trip with NRN this summer and it was a week of unbelievable joy, service, connection, prayer and learning. We loved meeting the prayer ladies at Bethsaida church and seeing their faithful and passionate way of coming to the Lord in desperation, open sorrow yet with joyful expectation that He is moving in their city, in their church and in their families. Highlights included: meeting our sponsor child and teaching art (he loves art and so do I), adding an Agape sponsor child and meeting her! Playing games and connecting with the people who would come to the Quinta in the evenings for dinner, games and prayer. Seeing the Lord provide and guide our group in sweet ways! I got to pray with a mom, when we brought food to homes and we cried together and bonded even through the language barrier. I felt so blessed to be welcomed into their homes, lives and hearts. I highly recommend going on this trip. Go with an open heart and hands and learn from your brothers and sisters in Nicaragua!”
-Stephanie & Donovan Dennis
“I got to experience God through the faith of the women who are praying for Soma. The way that they were going through so much themselves and yet were constantly praying for Soma. And also just the joy of the Lord that the kids carried. Every child was just so excited to be around a church they know loves them and is praying for them. All in all it was the faith that the families had even in the darkest valley. “

Circles is an organization committed to alleviating poverty in Indianapolis through connecting people across socio-economic lines.
“I saw God work through the simple, messy, beautiful process of building trust and relationship between people from various different backgrounds and stations in life. The power of community is in the consistency of showing up and seeking the good of another and Circles provides these opportunities weekly. I pray Soma’s partnership with Circles will continue to deepen as the years progress.”
-Micah Dean
“I've seen God move in so many ways, one pebble at a time...Just this afternoon, in the stories shared by several people from the Circles community at the celebration of life for a Circle Leader who recently passed away. In the appreciation his sister had for us showing up and sharing how we knew him and what he meant to us. That we could together both celebrate and mourn the loss of someone who was a friend, a brother, a father. In someone who credits the relationships they found at Circles for saving their life after the unexpected loss of a parent. In helping me see from the perspective as "the other" when I share a meal with a deaf friend and his two interpreters. When I get to sit down to share a meal with a muslim man, an 80-something veteran who lost both of his sons in their 20s, and a domestic violence survivor living at Coburn Place. When I see that a member of Soma, who is a newer ally, has driven down to the southside of Indy to pick up a single mom and her two boys and then takes them home after Circles and does this week after week. When someone's new and good is that they showed up today.”

-Packed out the PourHouse warehouse during the Race to Restock.
-Epic Clear the List day (168 participants - 16 move ins)
“I was truly blown away by the way God moved this May through Race to Restock and Clear the List. The addition of Race to Restock was such a powerful reminder of His faithfulness—every part of this event is a testimony to His goodness. As our team gathered to dream about the items that would bless our clients, I could never have anticipated the overwhelming outpouring of generosity that God would provide through His people. Every single need was met. The warehouse overflowed with supplies, and then we had the joy of watching those items fill the homes of 18 neighbors who had been living without. In poverty work, we’ve come to expect a certain level of chaos—missed calls, clients not home, last-minute changes. But on Clear the List day, every. single. client. was there. That kind of timing could only be orchestrated by God. On top of that, each household received a crockpot meal to enjoy as their very first dinner in a newly furnished home—a small but meaningful picture of God’s provision and care. Altogether, God mobilized 180 volunteers to bring this beautiful day to life. I am humbled and grateful to have witnessed His hand so clearly at work. Truly, all glory belongs to Him.”
